Cómo se dice «apagón» en inglés

Dado el apagón de ayer, me ha parecido bastante conveniente enseñar el vocabulario más importante relacionado con la electricidad.

Imagina que esto te pasa mientras estás de viaje o viviendo en un país extranjero.

Este apagón masivo ha sido algo excepcional, sí. Sin embargo, los cortes de luz puntuales no son excepcionales en absoluto.

Así que vamos a ver cómo se dice «apagón» en inglés y  todos esos English terms for power failures que necesitas para pedir ayuda, preguntar cuándo volverá la electricidad o simplemente contar tu anécdota sin trabarte.

Al terminar, tendrás a mano las palabras claves para describir apagones, caídas de tensión y sistemas de respaldo como un pro.

Términos generales

Para describir un corte de luz con precisión, conviene conocer estas palabras:

  • Power outage / blackout
    Apagón total.

    “After the storm, we had a blackout that lasted six hours.”

  • Power cut (UK) / Power failure (US)
    Corte puntual de suministro.

    “There was a power cut in my street last night.”

  • Power loss
    Pérdida de energía, se usa en contextos técnicos o noticiosos.

    “The data center recorded three brief power losses yesterday.”

  • Brownout
    Caída de tensión que provoca luz tenue y mal funcionamiento.

    “During the brownout, all the lights were dim.”

  • Rolling blackout
    Cortes programados y rotativos.

    “They announced rolling blackouts to prevent grid overload.”

  • Load shedding
    Descarga de carga: desconectar sectorizado para equilibrar la red.

    Load shedding was necessary to avoid a total collapse.”

  • Outage duration
    Duración del corte.

    “Do you know the expected outage duration?”

  • Power surge / spike
    Pico de tensión que puede dañar aparatos.

    “A power surge fried my computer’s power supply.”

  • Fuse / circuit breaker
    Fusible o automático que protege la instalación.

Verbos y acciones clave en un apagón en inglés

    Saltar (el automático).

    Protector contra picos de tensión.

  • Power grid operator
    Opera y supervisa la red de transmisión.

  • Utility company
    Empresa distribuidora de electricidad.

  • System operator
    Gestor del sistema eléctrico regional.

  • Outage coordinator
    Coordinador de cortes: planifica y comunica.

Explicar causas o detalles técnicos

Expresar inconvenientes y soluciones
